    true-love-lost:

    gaywrites:

In which President Obama gives the commencement address at Morehouse College, a historically African-American school in Atlanta, and gives a shout-out to gay graduates. He told the all-male graduating class: Keep setting an example for what it means to be a man. Be the best husband to your wife, or your boyfriend, or your partner. Be the best father you can be to your children. Because nothing is more important.” He strayed a little from the script, but got the message across just fine. (via Buzzfeed)

I read that the script he was following was actually neutral; it looks like he was pretty deliberate in removing some words to simplify it and just say wife - boyfriend - or partner, to an all-male graduating class.

So the American President has decided not just to avoid heterosexist / heteronormative modes of speech, but to embrace inclusive speech. In the South, amid lots of conservatives, and Christians, and Christian conservatives.

And when people started to react with a bit of an ooh, did you see him raise a finger, telling them to hold their horses? That’s right. Because he later went on to hammer the point home again; if you know what it’s like to be outside looking in, then you can have empathy for all kinds of people who experience the same, whether they’re Hispanic-Americans, gay or lesbian Americans, Muslim Americans, or people outside the borders of the United States.

    Today is a good day.
